Out of billions of lives moving through time, certain souls cross paths.

I am Lizay.

I am a work of nonfiction about conduct after consciousness: what becomes ours to do once we understand more clearly the forces and relationships that constitute a life.

I begin from the understanding that we are constituted through relationship, inheritance, circumstance, community, history, systems, grace, labor, and encounter. Within all of that, there are responsibilities that become ours.

And so I ask: how do we meet those responsibilities?

Judithe brought me into language.
Maria helped me find my form.
A community held my becoming.

A sentence is one way in. Before the terrain, the ground.

What I stand on

I begin from one proposition. Dignity is the ground of life.

Existence carries value before usefulness enters the question.

We enter a world that continually teaches us hierarchies of human worth. We meet them in families, in schools and workplaces, in institutions and nations. They become so ordinary that we mistake them for truths about human beings rather than arrangements human beings have created.

Dignity is the ground we already stand upon. It precedes status, usefulness, and recognition.

Difference without superiority.

Relationship without possession.

Power without the presumption of greater human worth.

Dignity is what makes all three possible.

Dignity is already there. The work is to build ways of being in relationship that begin from its existence.

What becomes possible when dignity governs how we meet, judge, interpret, protect, and build?

Dignity is the ground. A life is what stands on it.

How I am made

A life, within systems.

Systems become lived experience through people. You are somewhere in this.

Nothing in that life arrives alone. Within that ecology, I follow four systems in particular.

Four systems shape the terrain.

The site where inherited, structural, relational, and personal systems converge and become lived experience.

Dignity is the anchor carried within the person and into every relationship. Each system shapes the conditions through which dignity is recognized, expressed, and lived.

The terrain is not the journey. Three territories are how we orient ourselves within it.

Who brought me into language

Judithe Registre is a systems designer and author. Her writing examines the conditions under which people exist complete rather than fragmented, and capital meets care rather than undermines it. She has spent thirty years moving between institutions and the people they were built to serve, across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas, and Lizay is where that movement became a book.
